Reading is a matter of practice – as is critical thinking. To be able to critically engage with complex lines of argument and analyse the facts, we need to regularly engage with sources, arguments and perspectives.
Good text comprehension is one of the foundations, upon which critical thinking is built. What it needs is practice. And yes, practice can be tedious. It might be tempting to avoid the strenuous business of deep reading and leave much of it to AI.
That’s why it is important that we recognize the value of independent reading. And that we equip ourselves with the right tools.
TEXTPLORE! helps you with reading and better understanding difficult text. It guides you through the PQ4R reading strategy step by step, providing you with practical tips and tools as you go along. Also, it reminds you why in-depth reading is important – and why it is worth the effort.
Our thanks go to Prof. Dr. Sandra Niedermeier, who introduced PQ4R in one of her LinkedIn posts and inspired us to create TEXTPLORE!. We also drew inspiration from the comments below her post. Yvo Wüest gave us the idea to include a «Why PQ4R?»-reminder and used the staircase-illustration for PQ4R long before we did. Rolf Helbling led us to stress the importance of critical thinking and include the 5 Ws among our tips & tools.
Today, it’s easy to outsource the more tedious aspects of cognitive work to AI. So why make the effort to read, summarize, and understand text yourself?
